Modal Relationships and Their Inversions – The Harmonic Minor Scale

Last week we looked at the modal relationships and inversions of the modes for the Major Scale, this week it is the turn of The Harmonic Minor Scale.

It can be an interesting exercise to look at the modes ‘in reverse’.

In the key of C, The Harmonic Minor Scale is made up of the following notes:


The modes of the Harmonic Minor have the following notes (transposed to C):


The intervals for each would therefore be:


If we take the Harmonic Minor Scale and play the intervals backwards i.e. 1 3 1 2 2 1 2 , unlike the Major Scale from last week, this gives us a scale that isn’t already a mode. We have a new scale:


This scale is the Mixolydian b2.

If we repeat this process we find:


These new scales that we have now discovered are spelled as follows:


If we then convert them to the key of C:


A few of these new scales are of particular interest and we will return to them in the near future!!

We are starting to discover a lot of scales now. Again, play them and practice them. You won’t like them all, you may not like any, but you will never know until you try them!!
